From:

Membership Services: Erin Bausum

Facilities: Josh Royce

Exercise & Wellness: Peter Sebert

Aquatics: Kelly O’Hara

Swim Meet: On Saturday January 21, the Y Dolphins held their first-ever HOME swim meet. The pool at our former Roxbury Street location was not adequately sized for competition, so not only was this the first meet on Summit Road, it was the very first home meet EVER for our Dolphins! There was much enthusiasm and excitement as records were set and races were won, giving the Dolphins a comfortable victory over visiting Pittsfield. Thank you for your patience and understanding if you were inconvenienced in any way due to the flurry of activity. Congratulations Dolphins!

Shoes/Boots: Winter is here! With our beautiful floors and the safety of all of our members in mind, upon entering the building, please remove your outside shoes/boots and change into your sneakers!

Building Rules: We are in the process of having large poster-sized versions of the rules posted in all areas so that the expectations for use in each space are clear. We appreciate your understanding of our need to enforce the new rules. With a much larger aquatics area, the rules for the new pools have been the most dramatic. The new rule which has gained the most attention is the one requiring the passage of a swim test before children are allowed to swim without a parent/guardian. All pool rules can be found posted in the pool area and on our website. Please let a staff member know if you have any questions.

Family Locker Room: Speaking of rules, we’d like to reiterate the rules for the family locker room. This room is intended for children ages 12 and under, and their parents/adult caregivers. Children 13 and over should use the appropriate “adult” locker room. Recognizing that the women’s locker room can get very crowded during the busy morning hours, we are allowing adult women without children to use the family locker room before 1pm. Adult men without children aged 12 and under are not allowed to use the family locker room. We appreciate your adherence to this rule.

Benches & Hooks: Since opening day, members have expressed a need for more hooks & benches throughout the building. We appreciate your patience as we work through our “to-do” list which includes the installation of such items in the locker rooms, wellness center, track, racquetball corridor and group exercise areas.

Lockers: Small lockers to secure high value personal items while you are at the Y are on order. While we hear your concerns about the need for overnight lockers, we do not have enough lockers in the locker rooms to meet the demand from our members and have not yet identified another location within the building to install overnight/rental lockers.

Group Exercise Schedules: We will be making improvements to our group exercise schedules next month including the addition of classes during the late afternoon, more cycling and more Zumba. Also, we are looking closely at how our classes and offerings are spread throughout the week. Look for TRX classes beginning in March.

Free Weights: We are making improvements to our free-weight area including the addition of some equipment and improvements in traffic flow and placement.

Pool Temperatures: The lap pool will be between 82 & 84 degrees to meet the needs of our variety of users, and the “therapy” pool (whose name may be changed to “teaching” pool) will be kept between 85 & 87 degrees. While we recognize that this is not warm enough for true “therapy” it is an appropriate range for the diverse ways the pool is being used (group exercise classes, swim lessons & open swim times).

Parking: We thought going from 4 parking places on Roxbury Street to 150 on Summit Road would be sufficient. If you’ve ever been here from 4:00- 7:00pm you’ve seen the parking demand is high! We are working on this issue and appreciate your patience as we look into solutions.

Schedules: Schedules for all of our programs can be found at the front desk and at www.keene-ymca.org. Please check website, Facebook, Twitter and physical postings in the building for updates.

Youth/Teen After-School Options: We are pleased to have Lawrence Malloy Youth Development program leading our teen/youth programs and activities. Please check the schedule for activities and the member handbook for expectations.

Scales: Have been ordered and will be installed in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Building Temperatures: While the fluctuation in building temperatures has been less volatile, we are still working to fully balance the building and appreciate your patience with this issue.

Shades: We are looking into the purchase of sun/glare-blocking shades for the group exercise rooms and gym/track area.

Locker Room Cleanliness: We have hired additional staff to address the ongoing cleaning in the locker rooms and the rest of the facility. We are also working on additional paper towel holders and disposal receptacles for the women’s locker room.

Cell Phones: Cell phones usage is permitted in the lobby only. Cameras and other recording devices are not permitted in locker rooms under any circumstances.

Steam/Sauna: Work on the steam room and sauna is still continuing. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience. We will keep you updated on the progress.

Netting Around Gym: We are looking into purchasing netting to put around the north side of the gym, to keep flying balls and people away from families on their way to child watch and/or gymnastics.

Child Watch: Is available for members with a Family Membership while parents are exercising IN THE BUILDING. Please get a child watch ticket after checking in at the front desk before proceeding to child watch.
We appreciate your membership and welcome any and all feedback you may have.
